Meet the founding contributors →Published witness accounts. Yellow general-area pins represent the reported state or province, not the exact encounter spot. Other pins label their chosen location precision. A pin is not a verified identification.
Location choices come from approved reports. Choose a state to narrow the counties and parishes.
Based in Louisiana, this field journal brings together firsthand accounts of unusual sights, sounds and signs in the woods. You can share an encounter from anywhere.
Each pin leads to someone’s story, shown with the location precision they chose. Reports are reviewed before publication, and contributors can include photos, recordings or documents. A published account is a witness account, not proof of what caused it.
A place, a date and a few details can help others understand what happened. Whether you saw something, heard something or found tracks, you can tell the story in your own words.
For a question about the journal, or to request a report correction or removal, email [email protected]. Include the report title or reference number so we can find it.
Something you still remember? Tell us what happened—even if you aren’t sure what it was.

General locations welcome
Sharing your voice publicly is your choice.
Your encounter goes privately to the site owner for review. Approved stories appear in the journal and on the map. Contact details stay private. Audio is published only with your permission and separate approval.
Select a report summary to open its full details and review controls.
Approved reports show the account, encounter date or approximate year, public display name, chosen location precision, encounter details, and selected attachments. Optional email, contact name, phone number, and privacy requests stay private and are visible only to the site admin. They will not be published or shared publicly. Leave personal contact details out of the public narrative, encounter fields, and attachments. You may leave the public display name blank to appear as Anonymous.
You may provide only a country and state/province, with an optional county/parish. New general-area reports get a yellow reference pin for that state or province after approval. This pin is a geographic label point, not the encounter site; the exact encounter spot remains unknown. Older general-area accounts submitted under the no-pin option keep that choice. If you choose your own pin, you can share it as exact, nearby, or a wider area. Wider-area sharing is the default for chosen pins. Exact sharing requires a separate agreement before submission. Exact coordinates (up to six decimal places) become public only after approval. Nearby pins are rounded to a 0.02-degree grid and wider-area pins to a 0.1-degree grid before storage; the more precise input is discarded for those choices. Grid spacing is roughly 2 km or 11 km north–south and varies east–west by latitude. Broader pins do not prevent a location being inferred from a story, photo, or other attachment.
Attachments stay private while a report is pending or declined. Once approved, they can be viewed or downloaded by anyone. Media files may reveal names, faces, voices, exact locations, or embedded metadata. Remove private details before submitting. Attachment files are stored alongside the report data on this server and should be included in backups.
Reports remain private until approved. A reviewer may correct a title or location description and remove private information before publication. Accounts can be declined or taken off the public map. To request a correction or removal, email [email protected] with the report title or reference number. Keep your submission reference if you need to identify a report later.
Reports are stored on this site’s server. Maps use OpenStreetMap tiles; your browser connects to that service to display them. Read the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy. Temporary request limits use your connection’s IP address in server memory to reduce spam. The site records aggregate page requests and anonymous browser visits. Visit statistics use a random first-party cookie and include public page paths, timestamps, referral domains, device categories and approximate country, state/region and city supplied by Cloudflare for up to 90 days. No IP address, name, form contents or report contact information is stored in these statistics. We do not request GPS or store precise coordinates. Network-based location may be inaccurate. See the anonymous analytics controls below. The review area uses an eight-hour sign-in cookie; the separate admin dashboard uses a 30-minute sign-in cookie. Server and Cloudflare logs may separately record request details.
Game statistics record a random browser identifier, character, level progress, approximate network location, device category and active play time for up to 90 days. Paused, hidden and loading time is excluded from active play. No GPS, real names or IP addresses are stored in game analytics. Do Not Track, Global Privacy Control and the analytics opt-out below are respected. Minimal temporary run records are still used to check scores when analytics is off; unsubmitted records without analytics are removed after one day. A trail name and score are published only when you check the public leaderboard box. They are retained until withdrawn or removed by an administrator. The same run can be saved again with that box unchecked to remove its listing. Your public nickname is not attached to detailed location histories in the dashboard. These browser-based scores receive rule checks but are not identity-verified or cheat-proof. Contact [email protected] for removal requests if you no longer have the run open. Backups may retain older data.
First Tracks is optional. We retain your selected alias, participation and publication permissions, report reference, award number and email delivery status privately. One award per normalized email address; a private hash prevents duplicate awards. Certificates are delivered through Resend to your reporting email. Only the alias and approved account you explicitly allow appear on the founding contributors page or website feature. Contact names and email addresses are never published. The certificate link is private: anyone you share it with can download your certificate. To withdraw recognition or featuring consent, contact the site admin. Existing backups may retain older records.
Report contact details are optional, retained for admin review and follow-up, and not published. Email is needed if you request a certificate; ordinary reports can be submitted without it. Area email subscriptions are separate: we store your address, chosen area and confirmation/delivery status privately. You must confirm your email before digests start. Our email provider, Resend, processes the address and message to deliver it. Each digest includes preferences and unsubscribe links. Pending or cancelled addresses are removed after a short retention period; backups may retain older records.
If you choose to save an unfinished report, encounter details stay in this browser for up to 7 days. Contact information, files and consent choices are excluded. A saved draft is restored only when you choose Restore saved draft. Anyone using the same browser profile can access it; avoid saving on shared devices. Successful submission or Delete saved draft removes it.
When you choose Create my transcript, your audio is sent to OpenAI for transcription and held privately on this server for up to 24 hours while you finish. Unsubmitted server recordings expire after that period. A recording and transcript can be saved in this browser for up to 7 days for recovery; anyone using the same browser profile can access them. Successful submission removes that local draft. Optional contact information and publication choices are not saved locally. Submitted recordings are retained privately for admin review. Publishing the written account does not authorize public audio: your voice is available to visitors only if you explicitly consent and the admin separately approves the audio. Your voice and spoken details may identify you. Remove personal information from your written account and review the original audio separately. General map pins show a state/province reference point, not an exact encounter location. You can opt out of map sharing. Contact [email protected] with your reference to request removal; backups may retain older data.
Notebook drafts, photos, audio and optional coordinates are stored in this browser on this device. They are not sent to the server until you explicitly submit a report. Anyone using the same browser profile can access them. Clearing browser data, private browsing, storage pressure or losing the device can remove drafts. Download backups of important notes. The offline cache contains only the notebook’s public page and assets, not admin screens or report data. Microphone and device location are requested only when you choose their buttons.
A recording opened at the listening desk stays in your browser. Choosing to attach it carries it into the report form; it is uploaded only when you submit. Encounter sketches are optional, relative witness reconstructions, not measured maps. They appear publicly only after report approval.
Historical entries are editorial summaries of older public-domain publications. They link to their sources, distinguish publication dates from uncertain encounter dates, and use approximate regional pins. Their publication does not verify the claims. They are separate from firsthand community submissions and do not qualify for First Tracks.
Publication means the report passed review, not that its explanation was verified. Please keep reports respectful and based on your own experience.
